2009 Albertus Magnus Boys Soccer
Season in Review

The 2009 Albertus Magnus Boys Varsity soccer team’s season came to an end against Edgemont, ranked #1 in New York State at the time, in the Section One Semi-Finals. The Falcons finished the season with an 11 – 8 overall record and a 6-4 league record, good enough for 2nd place in their League.
The teams were tied 0-0 after regulation and the first 15 minute overtime. The winning goal was scored with less than 2 minutes remaining in the second overtime.  Junior Goalkeeper Tim Morris made several outstanding saves to keep the game scoreless for the first 107 minutes. Morris along with his defense led by Senior Captain Brandon Gruffi and Junior Denis Michalak, Sophomore Tim Kelly, Freshman Mike Strack and Senior Rubin Lee helped stifle an Edgemont team that had outscored their opponents by 47 goals.
The Falcons, seeded #4, advanced to the Section Semi – Finals with 2 exciting victories over Briarcliff and Hastings. In the opening round against Briarcliff Senior Captain John Spadaro scored both goals including the overtime winner for a 2 – 1 win. Junior Brendan Cummings and Sophomore James Huber had the assists on Spadaro’s goals.
In the second round Albertus faced Hastings. The teams met in the same round last season when Hastings was the #1 seed. Albertus won that game in a shootout. This year’s matchup proved to be another great game. After Hastings took an early 1-0 lead, Sophomore Martin Cummings tied the score  off an assist from John Spadaro. In the second half Brandon Gruffi set up Spadaro for what would prove to be the game winning goal in a 2 -1 win.
The regular season was filled with many close and exciting games including 5 overtime wins. The most exciting of those was a 1-0 win over previously undefeated Pearl River.   Freshman Fabain Langermann scored his first varsity goal in overtime off an assist from John Spadaro to hand Pearl River its first loss of the season.  The boy’s ability to win so many close games is a direct result of their dedication, hard work and the leadership of the 3 captains – Seniors Kevin O’Keeffe, John Spadaro and Brandon Gruffi.
  • John Spadaro led the team with 17 goals and 4 assists. His 17 goals were the 2nd most in Rockland County
  • Brandon Gruffi led the team and Rockland County with 16 assists. Brandon was named the Journal News Rockland Scholar Athlete of the Week. Click the following link to read the Journal News article - http://m.thejournalnews.com/news.jsp?key=307864
